Where is Laka Glacier?
My name is Shivam. I have been guiding people on the Laka Glacier trek for many years. Laka Glacier is a high-altitude snow and glacier area located above Triund in the Dhauladhar range, near McLeodganj and Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. It is one of the most popular short Himalayan treks for travellers who want snow, mountain views, and a real high-altitude experience without attempting a multi-day expedition.
Where is Laka Glacier Located?
Laka Glacier lies above the famous Triund trek route, beyond Snowline and Laka Got. The glacier is not a massive permanent ice field; it is a seasonal snow and ice zone beneath the towering Dhauladhar cliffs. When you stand at Laka Got, the mountains feel very close.
Laka Glacier Location
Laka Glacier is located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, in the Dhauladhar mountain range. It sits above the Triund ridge and is usually reached through McLeodganj, Dharamkot, or Gallu Devi.

About Laka Glacier
Laka Glacier is a scenic high-altitude destination above Triund, known for its snow-covered slopes and dramatic views of the Dhauladhar range. It is often combined with the Triund trek and is considered a next-level experience for beginner and intermediate trekkers. Many of my guests tell me this is the first time they truly feel the Himalayas.
Why is Laka Glacier Famous?
Laka Glacier is famous because it offers a glacier-like snow experience close to McLeodganj. Trekkers can reach snow without travelling to remote regions such as Lahaul, Spiti, or Kashmir. It is also popular for its close-up views of the Dhauladhar peaks. From Laka Got, the rocky mountain wall appears extremely close, making it one of the most dramatic viewpoints near Dharamshala.

- Snow trekking near McLeodganj
- Stunning views of the Dhauladhar range
- Triund-to-Snowline extension route
- Camping and stargazing opportunities

Best Time to Visit Laka Glacier
The best time to visit Laka Glacier is from April to June and from mid-September to October. During these months, the weather is generally more stable and the trail is easier to navigate. This is what I recommend to almost every guest.
Laka Glacier in Summer
Summer, from April to June, is the most popular time for the Laka Glacier trek. Snow is still visible in the upper sections, especially in April and May. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, while mornings and evenings remain cold. This is the best period for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
Laka Glacier in Monsoon
Monsoon, from July to August, brings heavy rain, slippery trails, fog, and landslide risk. Trekking during this period is not recommended, especially beyond Triund. The Dhauladhar range receives sudden weather changes during monsoon. Cloud cover can also block mountain views.
Laka Glacier in Winter
Winter, from December to February, turns the entire route into a snow trek. The views can be spectacular, but the trail becomes difficult due to snow, ice, and extreme cold. Winter trekking is suitable only for experienced trekkers with proper gear and a local guide. Snowline and Laka Got may remain closed depending on official restrictions and weather conditions.

Peak Season in Laka Glacier
The peak season is from April to June. During this time, Triund receives a large number of tourists, so it is better to book camps and taxis in advance. The second good season is September to October, when the skies are clearer and the crowds are comparatively lower.
Laka Glacier Weather
The weather at Laka Glacier changes quickly because of its high altitude. Even in summer, the area can become cold, windy, and cloudy within a short time. I always check the sky before starting the final climb.
Laka Glacier Weather by Month
| Month | Weather Condition |
|---|---|
| January–February | Heavy snow, extreme cold, difficult trail |
| March | Snow starts melting, cold mornings |
| April–May | Pleasant days, cold nights, snow visible |
| June | Warmer days, less snow, clear views |
| July–August | Rain, fog, slippery trails |
| September | Clear skies, fresh mountain views |
| October | Cold mornings, stable weather, good visibility |
| November | Very cold, early snow possible |
| December | Snowfall and freezing temperatures |
Average Temperature in Laka Glacier
- Summer: 5°C to 15°C during the day, 0°C to 5°C at night
- Monsoon: 10°C to 18°C during the day, colder at night
- Autumn: 5°C to 15°C during the day, below 0°C at night
- Winter: -5°C to 5°C during the day, -10°C or lower at night
Rainfall in Laka Glacier
Rainfall is highest during the monsoon months of July and August. The lower forest trail becomes muddy and slippery, while the upper rocky section becomes dangerous. Even outside monsoon, sudden rain can occur in the mountains. Always carry a rain jacket and waterproof cover for your backpack.
Snowfall in Laka Glacier
Snowfall is common from December to February. Snow may also remain on the trail until April or May, especially near Snowline and Laka Got. In April and May, trekkers often need microspikes for safe movement over icy patches. In winter, proper snow trekking equipment is essential.
